Overview
This 5-day expedition explores some of the best historic backcountry routes in Central Otago, combining classic 4WD touring, gold mining history, high country scenery and remote South Island landscapes into one unforgettable journey.
Starting in Fairlie and finishing in Bendigo, the trip travels through a remarkable variety of country on its way to and around Ranfurly, where we are based for four nights. Along the way, we cross Mackenzie Pass, travel through Black Forest Station and Danseys Pass, and explore some of the region’s best-known and most character-filled backcountry roads and trails.
Why this trip stands out
This trip stands out because it combines the history, scenery and driving character that make Central Otago so distinctive. It is a journey through a landscape shaped by gold rush history, remote farming country and wide open spaces, with routes that feel very different from the forest, alpine and river-valley environments found on many of our other trips.
With a small group, a relaxed expedition style and a base in Ranfurly for four nights, this trip offers an excellent balance of adventure, comfort and flexibility. It is ideal for those who want classic South Island 4WD travel, fascinating historic routes and a memorable Central Otago experience without needing to move accommodation every night.
