7-day guided small convoy expedition

The only departure in 2026

Price is per vehicle, not per person

Overview

This 7-day expedition is the only departure in 2026, combining a true South Island 4WD adventure with exceptional stargazing and astrotourism in some of New Zealand’s most remote and beautiful backcountry. It is designed for travellers who want to experience spectacular wilderness by day and the night sky in all its brilliance after dark.

Travelling through elevated, remote South Island locations with very low light pollution, this trip offers the rare opportunity to explore classic 4WD country while enjoying access to some outstanding dark sky sites. It is ideal for those who love getting into remote places and have a passion for the night sky, whether that means simply looking up in wonder or learning more about astrophotography and deep sky observation.

Why this trip stands out

This trip stands out because it offers something genuinely different. It combines the adventure, scenery and sense of journey of a South Island backcountry expedition with the chance to experience the Milky Way, planets and deep sky objects from remote dark sky locations far from the glow of towns and cities.

As the only departure in 2026, it has been created for those who want more than a standard 4WD journey. It suits travellers who want to combine remote wilderness travel with unforgettable night sky experiences, whether that means simply enjoying pristine skies or learning more about observing and photographing the southern sky.

Night sky experience

Each night is centred on making the most of the dark sky conditions and the opportunities the location provides. Activities may include visual observation of planets, nebulae and star clusters, electronically assisted astronomy, tracked and untracked Milky Way imaging, and discussion around camera settings, image acquisition techniques, polar alignment and general astrophotography methods. When time and conditions allow, there may also be demonstrations and discussion on image processing techniques and software.

Because this is a wilderness-based stargazing trip, weather always plays a part. If cloud or poor conditions limit observing opportunities, the educational and discussion elements become an even more valuable part of the experience.

Astrotourism leader

The astrotourism and astrophotography components of the tour are led by Dr Nevin Amos, who brings many years of experience in night sky imaging and a deep appreciation for the value of truly dark skies. This gives the trip an extra layer of depth for those wanting more than just a scenic night under the stars.

Accommodation

This trip is designed around reaching remote, elevated locations that offer excellent dark sky potential. Conditions can be cold at night, which is part of what helps make these sites so rewarding for observation and imaging. Specific overnight arrangements should be confirmed in your booking details, but the overall focus is on maximising both wilderness access and night sky opportunity.
